2009 ILJ Symposium

On February 27th and 28th, the Cornell International Law Journal will host its 2009 Symposium:"Comparative Antitrust Policies in Mergers and Acquisitions." Practioners, regulators and scholars will gather at Cornell Law School to discuss merger review and antitrust policies in various jurisdictions and their impact on the practice of mergers and acquistions.

Mr. Kevin Arquit '78, a partner at Simpson, Thatcher, and Bartlett LLP, will deliver the keynote address.

The symposium will then proceed with three panels discussing the following issues:

"Merger Review Policies Outside of the U.S." This panel will feature:

  • Mr. Terry Calvani, Of Counsel, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP
  • Professor Alfonso Miranda, Director of the Centre for Competition Law Studies - CEDEC, Javeriana University Law School, Bogota, Colombia
  • Mr. Jonathan Scott, Partner, EU and Competition Law, Herbert Smith LLP

"Institutional Differences in Merger Control and their Implications" This panel will feature:

  • Mr. Don Baker, Partner, Baker & Miller PLLC
  • Mr. Mark Leddy, Partner, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP
  • Professor George Hay, Edward Cornell Professor of Law and Professor of Economics, Cornell Law School

"The Cooperation of Antitrust and Competition Authorities in Merger Regulation." This panel will feature:

  • Professor Dr. Christian Kirchner, Humboldt University School of Law, Berlin
  • Mr. Andrea Appella, Director of International Affairs, U.K. Office of Fair Trading
  • Mr. John Parisi, Counsel for European Competition Affairs, U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

The Symposium's ten participants will submit articles based on their remarks. These articles will be published in a forthcoming issue of the International Law Journal.
